Leucism, or leukism, is an abnormal plumage condition caused by a genetic mutation that prevents pigment, particularly melanin, from being properly deposited on a bird’s feathers. As a result, the birds do not have the normal, classic plumage colors listed in field guides, and instead the plumage have several color changes, including: white patches where the bird should not have any; paler overall plumage that looks faint, diluted or bleached; or overall white plumage with little or no color discernible.

Leucism is relatively unusual in birds, and albinism is rare. From 2000-2006, Project FeederWatch participants reported fewer than 1000 leucistic birds. Given that participants report about 5.5 million birds each season, the percentage of leucistic birds being reported is very small.

Scooter’s second litter, featuring Blackjack having a psychokitten freakout, Betty (i named her Cassie but new owner had other plans), two pics of Alexei the diva, Barney (I named him Sammy) and Newt the weirdo.

These are kittens from Scooter’s first litter in 2010. I didn’t get to see these kittens until she brought them to my porch when they were about four or five weeks old, so they were pretty wary of people. The kitten with the smudged nose looks almost exactly like Blackjack, and there was also another sealpoint in this litter, along with the tortoiseshell and a pure black kitten.

I was unemployed at the time so I wasn’t able to take care of these kittens, unfortunately. I ended up having to give them to the shelter. They were semi feral but young enough to be socialized, and the black and white one got to the point where it was pretty okay with me picking it up, so I really hope they were adopted out.

When she had her next litter I was better equipped to deal with it, so I was able to have three of her kittens adopted out to friends and I kept Lexi and Blackjack and got Scooter fixed.
